Beyond the Boundary - Kuriyama Mirai - Anime Matsuri 2014

I made a blood sword for a client and wound up buying material enough for 2. It was incredibly easy however you absolutely need a saw (I used a jig saw) and a power sander (I used an angle grinder and orbital). Acrylic is incredibly hard and as such needs some heavy duty stuff to cut and shape.

Here's the art I used.

First step is to cut out the shape in the acrylic.

Glue them together (using special acrylic glue).

Grind down the edges.

Buff and sand until it is clear again.

Each sword takes me 3-4 hours even though there are only a few pictures. It takes light very strangely and photographs strangely as well. I shipped one off to the client and the other...well it was given away haha.

  1. It's a bit silly of question, but what color acrylic did you use? When I look online, the red acrylic sheets I see aren't as dark as the ones you used.

    1. Depends entirely on how big you make yours. I used 12sq ft of acrylic I think.

  5. Greetings! Extremely happy that I fell upon this. Since you are used to using this method, do you think that it would be possible for me to make blade portion of this weapon out of this material? Realistically...

I have honestly been struggling with what I should make it out of since I am new to prop making. Thank you for your time! :)

    1. Yeah should be fine! Acrylic is a bit heavy though so each weapon will have considerable weight to it, the effect should be worth it though! GL!

  10. Out of curiosity, where did you buy your acrylic from? The hardware stores nearby have red acrylic, but in monstrous sizes for monstrous prices. I'd really appreciate the info.
